Best Sushi Rice Brands and Where to Buy in Hong Kong

For sushi at home, buy Japanese short-grain rice — most often Koshihikari. In Hong Kong, a 5kg bag typically costs HKD 180–280. The harvest date matters as much as the brand.

Quick guide. Classic choice: Koshihikari (Niigata), 5kg about HKD 180–280. Stickier, plumper: Yumepirika (Hokkaido), 5kg about HKD 250–400. Balanced, cheaper: Hitomebore, about HKD 160–250. Budget: blended Japanese rice from about HKD 100. Where: city'super, AEON, HKTVmall.

Varieties

Koshihikari is the benchmark sushi rice — slightly sweet, glossy and firm. Yumepirika from Hokkaido has larger, plumper grains and is even stickier. Hitomebore is slightly less sweet with a balanced flavour. Akita Komachi is another widely sold option. All are short-grain Japonica rice.

Where to buy

city'super (ifc, Times Square, Harbour City) carries several grades of Koshihikari and Yumepirika — Shinmei Koshihikari is about HKD 240 for 5kg. AEON stocks Akita Komachi, Niigata Koshihikari and its Topvalu label from about HKD 130 for 5kg. HKTVmall lists dozens of brands with delivery — Akita Komachi around HKD 160. Pandamart has 2kg bags for quick top-ups.

Check the harvest date. Choose rice harvested within the past 12 months. Autumn's shinmai (new-crop rice) has the best flavour — and it arrives around now.

Storage in Hong Kong's humidity: keep rice in an airtight container, ideally in the fridge, and use within about two months of opening.

Skip pre-seasoned "sushi rice" mixes. They are often pricier and less flexible. Buy plain rice and season it yourself. See how to make sushi rice.
