Vegetarian and vegan sushi in Hong Kong

Great sushi without the fish

Vegetarian and Vegan Sushi in Hong Kong

Vegetarian sushi in Hong Kong ranges from a 14-course vegetarian omakase to cucumber rolls at a belt chain. The key is knowing that "no fish" doesn't always mean vegetarian — many sauces and soups contain fish stock.

Where to go. Vegetarian omakase: NIWA, 61 Caine Road, Central — 14 courses, HKD 780, Buddhist-vegetarian. Vegetarian Japanese: Isoya, Wan Chai. Vegan sushi rolls: POP Vegan, SoHo. Chains: Genki Sushi — cucumber and avocado rolls, edamame, seaweed salad.

NIWA, Central

At G/F & Cockloft, Ichang House, 61 Caine Road, NIWA is an 18-to-20-seat omakase restaurant with a dedicated vegetarian omakase at HKD 780 for 14 courses. It follows Buddhist-vegetarian principles — no garlic or onion — with vegetables sourced from Japan and dishes such as somen with black truffle and a kombu vegetarian roll. Book at least two days ahead. OpenRice lists it open Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday.

Isoya, Wan Chai

At 9/F, 83 Wan Chai Road, Isoya is a vegetarian Japanese restaurant with vegetarian sushi and maki, noodles, tofu, tempura and an omakase set. Most coverage is older, so check it is open before visiting.

Other options

POP Vegan (1/F, 28 Elgin Street, SoHo) has served a vegan "tuna" sushi roll and avoids pungent vegetables. Tong De Veggie offers vegan sushi takeaway, according to a 2025 review. Coverage of both is limited — confirm before you go.

At chains

HappyCow lists Genki Sushi vegan choices as avocado rolls, cucumber rolls, seaweed salad, edamame and cucumber salad. Inari (sweet tofu pouch) is often vegetarian but may be seasoned with dashi. See Genki Sushi menu.

Say it clearly: "No fish, no dashi, no egg" — and add "no garlic or onion" if you follow a Buddhist diet.

Hidden animal ingredients: dashi (bonito stock) in miso soup and sauces · egg in tamago and mayo · fish-based tare · bonito flakes as garnish.

Top omakase counters may not adapt. Forbes Travel Guide notes that Sushi Saito could not accommodate vegans or vegetarians because its menu is primarily seafood. Ask before booking.
