Wan Chai Omakase and Izakaya Sushi Counters
Colour key: prices · what to do · cautions · places
Choose a dedicated sushi counter in Wan Chai when watching sushi preparation is the priority; choose an izakaya when grilled dishes and drinks matter equally. Minato’s published dinner omakase starts at HKD 1,288 plus 10% service. Sushi Kit offers an all-counter main room, while Sumito provides a robatayaki alternative rather than an equivalent sushi-led experience.
Minato at Great Eagle Centre suits diners comparing clearly published sushi courses. Sushi Kit on Oi Kwan Road suits a counter-focused meal with direct restaurant enquiries. Sumito at QRE Plaza suits friends prioritising charcoal-grilled food and an izakaya setting. These are different formats, not interchangeable recommendations.
30-second decision: Want ten sushi pieces in a published course? Minato’s standard omakase. Want an all-counter main room? Sushi Kit. Want robata and drinks? Sumito. Confirm the exact counter type before paying a deposit.
1. Sushi-led omakase counters
Minato, Great Eagle Centre
Where: Shops G4–G6, G/F, Great Eagle Centre, 23 Harbour Road, Wan Chai. Open Google Maps. The official website identifies an eight-seat sushi bar and Exhibition Centre MTR Exit B1.
The published dinner menu lists Chef Omakase at HKD 1,288: three appetisers, four sashimi varieties, ten sushi pieces, soup and Japanese fruit. Chef Premium Omakase costs HKD 1,688, with five sashimi varieties, six sushi pieces, a hot dish and a chef’s recommendation, alongside appetisers, soup and fruit. Both add 10% service.
Choose it for: comparing course composition before booking. Think twice if: you equate a higher price with more nigiri: the premium course lists fewer sushi pieces. It adds other elements instead.
Before booking: phone 2345 0663 or email reservation@minato.com.hk. Request the sushi bar, not the separate teppanyaki area. Published hours are 12:00–15:00 and 18:00–22:30 daily. The menu filename indicates May 2026; reconfirm its applicability to your date.
Sushi Kit, Oi Kwan Road
Where: Shop 2, G/F, 32 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai. Open Google Maps. Its reservation page describes an all-counter main sushi bar and suggests vehicle drop-off on Yat Sin Street.
Choose it for: making counter seating central to the booking. Budget: a current course price was not established. Ask for the menu and service-charge treatment on 3501 8570. Published sittings operate Monday–Saturday, with lunch 12:00–15:00 and dinner 18:30–23:00.
Think twice if: your group wants private conversation away from the main room. A separate private room exists, but that is not the same seating experience. For a wider comparison, use our Wan Chai sushi guide.
2. An izakaya alternative
Sumito, QRE Plaza
Where: 6/F, QRE Plaza, 202 Queen’s Road East, Wan Chai. Open Google Maps. The Hopewell dining directory identifies robatayaki using binchotan charcoal as its speciality.
Choose it for: a grill-led evening instead of a fixed sushi sequence. Budget: OpenRice places it in the HKD 401–800 spending band, which is not a menu quote or guaranteed final bill.
Think twice if: sushi preparation is the reason for visiting. A robata counter is not a sushi counter; confirm the seating and current sushi selection. Its booking page gives 2152 0369. The inline listing specifies a two-hour dinner dining period.
3. Save the course comparison
Food budget at Minato: standard omakase plus service is HKD 1,416.80 per person; premium is HKD 1,856.80. The difference is HKD 440 including service. Drinks are additional.
Copy this enquiry: “We would like [number] seats on [date]. Is the booking at a sushi counter, robata counter or table? Please send the current menu, total charges, dietary restrictions and cancellation terms.”

4. Frequently asked questions
Does omakase guarantee counter seating?
No. Request the named counter and have the restaurant confirm it.
Does the premium menu mean more sushi?
Not at Minato: its published standard course lists ten sushi pieces; premium lists six alongside other dishes.
Can an izakaya replace a sushi omakase?
Only if your group prefers a broader meal. Do not expect an identical sequence or chef interaction.
Research checked October 2026 using Minato’s website and published menu, Sushi Kit’s reservation page, the Hopewell dining directory and booking listings. This is a researched guide, not a firsthand review. Current Sushi Kit prices and Sumito’s sushi selection were not established. Menus, hours and booking terms may change.
