Credit Card Dining Offers for Japanese Restaurants in Hong Kong
Credit card offers split into two kinds in Hong Kong, and they are worth very different amounts. Cashback and rebate programmes return 2% to 8% on dining spend with conditions attached. Merchant offers give a flat 10% to 20% off at specific restaurants, which is usually the bigger saving on a single sushi meal.
For sushi specifically, one card stands out on paper: HSBC Red has offered 8% cashback at named chains including Sushiro, against 0.4% elsewhere.
1. Merchant offers: the bigger single-meal saving
Bank merchant programmes carry flat discounts at participating Japanese restaurants. HSBC's year-round offers have listed, among Japanese cuisine merchants, 10% off dine-in dinner, 20% off an entire order Monday to Saturday, 15% off on spending of HKD 298 or above, 10% off on spending of HKD 500 or above from Sunday to Thursday, and 10% off on dinner spending of HKD 1,000 or more per person.
Visa's regional Dine and Save programme has offered up to 20% off total bills at participating Hong Kong restaurants, and American Express has run a Gourmet Club with up to 30% savings at more than 300 restaurants and bars, plus a two-for-one set dinner benefit for Platinum members at 16 top restaurants including Michelin-starred ones.
Note carefully that both of those programmes carried fixed end dates in their published terms, which is the norm rather than the exception. Always check the current offer list rather than an article.
2. Cashback and rebate cards
- HSBC Red: 8% cashback at specific partner chains including Sushiro, and 0.4% elsewhere. Excellent for belt sushi, irrelevant at an omakase counter.
- Hang Seng Travel+: up to 5% on local dining, requiring around HKD 6,000 monthly total spend, capped near HKD 500 a month, and excluding online orders and outlets inside hotels.
- DBS Eminent: 5% on dining, with each qualifying transaction at HKD 300 or above and a monthly cap around HKD 8,000 of spend.
- BOC Cheers Infinite: a points multiplier worth roughly 4%, subject to a monthly spend requirement.
- BOC Chill: 10% but only at designated merchants, capped near HKD 150 a month.
The pattern is consistent: high headline rates come with minimum spends, monthly caps and category exclusions.
3. The exclusions that matter for sushi
- Hotel outlets excluded. One card's dining rebate explicitly excludes restaurants inside hotels, which removes Sushi Shikon, Sushi Saito and every hotel buffet.
- Online and delivery excluded, which removes platform sushi orders.
- Minimum transaction sizes, such as HKD 300 per transaction, which a cheap lunch set will not reach.
- Monthly caps, which limit a single expensive omakase dinner's benefit.
- Registration requirements, since several programmes require enrolment before spending.
- No stacking with vouchers or member rates in most terms.
4. Which approach to use, by meal type
- Belt chain lunch: a partner-chain cashback card, where 8% applies directly.
- Hotel buffet: a merchant offer or the hotel's own eShop rate, since hotel outlets are often excluded from rebates.
- Mid-range counter dinner: a bank merchant discount of 10% to 20%, which beats any cashback rate.
- Premium omakase: check merchant lists, but expect no discount; plan around lunch pricing instead.
- Delivery: platform promotions rather than card rebates, which commonly exclude online orders.
5. Frequently asked questions
Which card is best for sushi?
For chain sushi, a card with a named partner rate such as 8% at Sushiro. For restaurant meals, whichever bank's merchant programme includes the restaurant you want, at 10% to 20% off.
Can I combine a card offer with a voucher?
Usually not. Most terms prohibit stacking, and buffets often calculate the 10% service charge on the original price regardless.
Do these offers cover omakase?
Rarely. Small counters have no need to discount, and hotel counters are frequently excluded from rebate categories.
Where else can I save?
