Home Sushi Party Menu Plan and Shopping List

The easiest home sushi party is a temaki (hand roll) party: you cook the rice, lay out fillings and everyone rolls their own. Add a store-bought platter and a few sides, and you can feed 6–8 people with minimal stress.

Party for 6. Rice: 3 rice-cooker cups (540ml) raw, seasoned. Nori: 20–30 half sheets. Fish: two 6-kind sashimi platters or about 600g sashimi. Cooked fillings: prawns, tamago, crab, unagi. Veg: cucumber, avocado, shiso. Allow: 4–6 hand rolls per person.

Menu

Starter: edamame and miso soup. Main: temaki bar with raw and cooked fillings. Backup: a ready-made sushi platter — Sushi Express's 30-piece Party Box is about HKD 190–198. Sides: seaweed salad, karaage. Dessert: mochi or fruit.

Shopping list

Rice and seasoning: Japanese short-grain rice, rice vinegar, sugar, salt (or sushi vinegar). Wraps: yaki-nori. Fish: sashimi platters — Sushiro's 6-kind platter is HKD 106 — or fish by weight from a premium deli. Cooked: boiled prawns, tamago, crab sticks, unagi. Veg: cucumber, avocado, shiso, scallion, pickled radish. Condiments: soy sauce (plus gluten-free tamari if needed), wasabi, gari, Japanese mayo, sesame.

Timeline

Day before: shop for dry goods and buy rice. Two hours before: cook and season rice. One hour before: cut vegetables, make tamago, prepare cooked fillings. Last: collect sashimi and keep it in the fridge until guests sit down.

Put fish on ice. Set sashimi on a tray over ice and bring it out in small batches.

Guests with dietary needs: label a cooked-only plate for children and pregnant guests, and keep shellfish separate. See sushi without raw fish.

Two-hour rule. Throw away sashimi left out for more than about two hours. See how to store sushi safely.
