Kid-Friendly Sushi Options Without Raw Fish
Children can enjoy sushi without eating anything raw. Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety advises that young children should not eat raw fish, but a large part of every sushi menu is cooked, vegetarian or egg-based.
Cooked sushi for kids. Egg and tofu: tamago, inari. Cooked seafood: ebi (boiled prawn), unagi, cooked crab. Veg: cucumber rolls (kappa maki), avocado, corn gunkan. Sides: chawanmushi, karaage, edamame, udon. Skip: wasabi and most soy sauce.
Best picks
Tamago — sweet omelette, the classic kids' favourite. Inari — rice in a sweet tofu pouch. Kappa maki — cucumber roll. Ebi — butterflied boiled prawn (not for shellfish allergy). Unagi — grilled eel with sweet glaze. Tempura rolls — fried prawn or vegetable. Corn gunkan — usually with mayo.
What to avoid
Raw fish, raw shrimp, raw scallop, fish roe and seared (aburi) sushi, which is still raw inside. The Centre for Food Safety also advises young children to avoid large predatory fish, such as tuna (especially bigeye and bluefin), because of mercury.
Where to go in Hong Kong
Genki Sushi has a kids' favourites menu section and tablet ordering. Itacho Set E is built on egg, inari, shrimp and crab stick. Sushi Express boxes include cooked shrimp, eel and tamago. See family friendly sushi.
Order cooked plates first so they arrive fast, and ask for no wasabi (sabi nuki) on everything.
Allergy check: prawn, crab and imitation crab are shellfish risks · tamago contains egg · mayo contains egg · soy sauce contains wheat.
Choking risk: cut rolls into smaller pieces for toddlers, and watch children eating sticky rice.
