Omakase Under HKD 500 and HKD 1,000: What You Get at Each Level

You don't need HKD 4,000 for good omakase in Hong Kong. Under HKD 500 buys a short, casual counter meal. Under HKD 1,000 buys a proper seat with a named chef. The sweet spot for most people is lunch at HKD 580–980.

What each level buys. Under HKD 500: 8–12 pieces, fast, casual — e.g. Uogashi Nihonichi from about HKD 398. HKD 500–1,000: appetisers, 10–15 nigiri, a real counter — e.g. Sushi Sadayama at HKD 588, Gonpachi at HKD 580/880, Sushi Zinc at HKD 880. Above HKD 1,500: rare cuts, longer menus, private space.

Under HKD 500

Uogashi Nihonichi at G12, Central Market, has listed compact omakase from about HKD 398. Expect a short sequence of nigiri made in front of you, in under an hour, at a brisk counter. Great for a solo lunch; less so for a special occasion. See standing sushi bars.

HKD 500 to 1,000

This is where omakase becomes a proper meal. Sushi Sadayama in Sheung Wan (HKD 588 lunch, rated 4.9) serves seared mackerel, akagai, chutoro and uni. Gonpachi in Tsim Sha Tsui offers HKD 580 and 880 lunches with a harbour view. Sushi Zinc's lunch is HKD 880. Shimoumi Sushi at The Cameron has a reported HKD 780 lunch. OpenRice has listed Homakase in Causeway Bay at HKD 588.

Above HKD 1,500
