Romantic Sushi and Omakase for Dates and Anniversaries in Hong Kong
A sushi counter can be the most romantic room in Hong Kong or the most awkward. It depends on the layout, the noise, the pace and whether you know each other well. A first date and a tenth anniversary need very different rooms. This guide matches the restaurant to the moment.
Quick picks. For a milestone anniversary, Sushi Shikon's six-seat private counter. For atmosphere, Udatsu Sushi in a heritage building. For a view, Gonpachi from HKD 580. For a discreet room, Sushi Kumogaku. For a first date, Aqua or Zoku, where you can talk and stay flexible. Mention the occasion when you book.
What makes a sushi restaurant romantic
The seat matters more than the food. A straight counter puts you side by side facing the chef; a corner seat lets you turn to each other; a private counter removes the audience. Formal counters are very quiet, which suits long-term couples but can make a first date feel like a performance. And omakase runs on a fixed schedule, so it is not the place to linger over a second bottle.
For a milestone anniversary
Sushi Shikon
Where: 7/F, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Central. Price: HKD 2,250 lunch, HKD 4,000 dinner, plus 10% service.
Three MICHELIN stars since 2014, an eight-seat main counter and a separate six-seat private counter — the strongest anniversary booking in Hong Kong. Book six to eight weeks ahead. See the best omakase in Hong Kong.
Udatsu Sushi
Where: Stable Block, FWD House 1881, Tsim Sha Tsui.
A restored heritage setting with a real sense of arrival, rated 4.9 from more than 80 reviews. One diner described a birthday dinner where staff added a special treat; another celebrated a work anniversary there. It has listed closures on Mondays and Sundays.
Sushi Kumogaku
Where: H Code, Pottinger Street, Central.
A hinoki counter with a private room behind it, discreet and easy to walk past. Ask for the private room for an anniversary.
For a view
Gonpachi on the 28th floor at No. 1 Peking Road has a 270-degree harbour view and omakase at HKD 580 and 880 for lunch and HKD 1,380 for dinner. Ask for a window table rather than the counter, and book 45 to 60 minutes before sunset. Nobu at the Regent on Salisbury Road is a polished waterfront option for a celebration. For a first date
Choose flexibility over formality. Aqua on the 17th floor of H Zentre has Japanese and Italian menus, city views, a romantic atmosphere and late hours — to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays — so you can stay or leave as the evening goes. Zoku at The Hari in Wan Chai has a terrace and a Japanese-ingredient cocktail list. An izakaya is also a good first-date format; see Wan Chai omakase and izakaya counters.
For value
You do not need a four-figure bill. Sushi Sadayama in Sheung Wan runs lunch around HKD 588 in a quiet, warm, wood-lined room, rated 4.9. HAN DINING at Langham Place in Mong Kok has a two-person lunch set at HKD 298 in a calm, refined room that reviewers say couples use for birthdays; it closes on Sunday. Lunch at any top counter is commonly 40% to 60% cheaper than dinner; see lunch versus dinner omakase prices.
Make it special without a spectacle. Mention the occasion when you book, and ask what the restaurant can do. A small dessert plate or a note from the chef works better at a quiet counter than a song or a cake.
Planning the evening
Book early: six to eight weeks for top counters. Ask for the right seat: private counter, corner or window. Share allergies in writing before paying a deposit. Check cancellation terms, as one starred counter has charged 50% within 48 hours. Arrive early, and leave time afterwards — dinner can take two hours. See how to book a sushi restaurant and dress code and seating rules.
Watch holiday menus. Valentine's Day, Christmas and New Year menus are priced separately and can disappoint. At one hotel counter, a diner paid HKD 3,080 per person on New Year's Eve 2025, noted a chef change, and felt it was not worth the price. Read recent reviews before booking a festival night.
Drinks for two
Sake by the glass lets you change style through the meal: crisp junmai ginjo for white fish, fuller junmai for fatty tuna. For a sake-focused evening, Godenya in Sheung Wan builds the meal around sake flights. See sushi and sake pairing and sake, tea and drinks for sushi.
If one of you does not eat raw fish
Choose a view restaurant with a broad menu, or a kappo counter with cooked courses. Tell the restaurant when you book. See omakase substitutions and kaiseki versus omakase. For pregnancy, see sushi for pregnant women.
Common questions
What is the most romantic sushi restaurant in Hong Kong?
Sushi Shikon's private counter for a milestone, Udatsu Sushi for atmosphere, and Gonpachi for a view.

From about HKD 298 for two at lunch to HKD 8,000 or more for two at a top dinner, plus 10% service.
