Foodpanda vs Deliveroo: which app has better sushi in Hong Kong

Two apps, one sushi craving

Foodpanda vs Deliveroo: Which App Has Better Sushi in Hong Kong?

The short answer is that this comparison no longer exists. Deliveroo stopped operating in Hong Kong on 7 April 2025, after selling key local assets to foodpanda. If you want sushi delivered today, the real choice is between foodpanda and Keeta. This guide explains what happened and which app to use now.

The answer in one line. Deliveroo has left Hong Kong. Use foodpanda or Keeta. Keeta leads the market at around 53% share and has waived delivery fees on standard orders from HKD 100; foodpanda is strong on supermarkets and delis and offers the PandaPro subscription. Check both for your address.

What happened to Deliveroo

Deliveroo announced its withdrawal from Hong Kong in March 2025, after nine years in the city. It sold key local assets to foodpanda and officially ceased operations on 7 April 2025. Former Deliveroo customers were directed to foodpanda. The exit left Hong Kong as a two-platform market dominated by foodpanda and Keeta.

Old guides are out of date. Articles, app-store listings and bookmarks that still recommend Deliveroo for sushi in Hong Kong were written before April 2025. Deliveroo cannot take orders here.

Why the market changed

Keeta, the platform run by Meituan, entered Hong Kong in May 2023 and competed hard on price and single-person meals. Within about two and a half years it had become profitable and overtaken foodpanda, with industry analysis now putting it at roughly 53% of the market. In April 2026 the Competition Commission opened a consultation on Keeta's proposed commitments to relax exclusive deals with restaurants, which could mean more restaurants listed on both apps.

Choice of restaurants

Both carry the major chains — Sushiro, Genki Sushi, sen-ryo and others — so chain sushi is available on either. The difference is independent restaurants: each app lists a different set of neighbourhood Japanese kitchens near you. foodpanda has strong supermarket and deli listings, including Don Don Donki and city'super, often with itemised piece counts.

Price

Keeta has waived delivery fees on standard orders from HKD 100, which makes it cheap for a single order. foodpanda's lever is its PandaPro subscription, which pays off for frequent orderers. Both run promotions that change often, so compare the total at checkout rather than the menu price.

Speed and quality

Speed depends on distance more than on the app. For sushi, choose the restaurant closest to you on either platform, and order rice bowls or rolls rather than nigiri. See sushi delivery in Hong Kong.

How to choose each time: search the same dish on both apps, compare the final total including fees, pick the restaurant with the shortest delivery time and strong recent reviews, and order a format that travels well.

Things both apps share

Weather suspensions: when the Black Rainstorm Warning was raised on 18 June 2026, both Keeta and foodpanda halted delivery immediately, while takeaway collection stayed open. No refrigeration: courier bags are insulated, not chilled, so raw fish should be eaten on arrival. Late-night gaps: most sushi kitchens stop by 22:30 on both apps.

Alternatives to the apps

Ordering from a restaurant's own site can avoid platform mark-ups; sen-ryo, for example, runs 24-hour online ordering. Collecting is often cheapest and freshest of all. See sushi takeaway near MTR stations, delivery fees and minimum orders and the cheapest sushi delivery under HKD 150.

Keeping delivered sushi safe

Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety classifies sushi and sashimi as high-risk foods and identifies 4°C to 60°C as the danger zone. Refrigerate within thirty minutes if you cannot eat immediately, and never keep raw fish overnight. See how to store delivered sushi safely.
