Late night sushi in Hong Kong: restaurants and delivery

Sushi after the kitchens close

Late Night Sushi in Hong Kong: Restaurants and Delivery

Hong Kong stays up late, but most sushi does not. Chain branches usually close by 22:30, and omakase counters take their last sitting by about 20:00. After 23:00 your options narrow to izakayas, sake bars, a few late restaurants and one supermarket that never closes. This guide shows where to go, and what to watch out for when eating raw fish late.

After-hours in one box. Until midnight: Gonpachi in Tsim Sha Tsui every night. Until 1am at weekends: Aqua and CHU CHU. Until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays: Sake Bar MURA. 24 hours: Don Don Donki at 118 Nathan Road. Most delivery sushi stops around 22:30.

What time sushi closes

Belt chains such as Genki Sushi and sen-ryo generally close between 22:00 and 22:30. Sushiro branches typically close around 22:00. Omakase counters run fixed sittings, so their kitchens stop well before 21:00. If you want a proper sushi meal, eat before 21:00 and move on to drinks.

Late izakayas and sake bars

Izakaya & Sake Bar CHU CHU on the 25th floor of Circle Tower, 28 Tang Lung Street, Causeway Bay, is rated 4.9 from nearly 700 reviews and serves late-night food from 5:30pm to midnight, and to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Sake Bar MURA at Kimberley Mansion on Austin Avenue in Tsim Sha Tsui, a twelve-seat counter rated 4.7, trades 6pm to 1am and to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, closed Sunday. In Central, SAKABA MASAKA on Shin Hing Street runs 3pm to midnight, and Sake Bar Yorudake on Graham Street runs to midnight, closed Sunday.

Expect sashimi and small plates rather than a nigiri sequence. See Sheung Wan sushi bars for after-work drinks, sushi bars in Tai Kwun and Lan Kwai Fong and sushi and sake pairing.

The 24-hour option

Don Don Donki at 118 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, trades around the clock and prepares sushi and sashimi on site, with 8-piece salmon sushi near HKD 59.90 and salmon rice bowls around HKD 50. Late at night, stock is whatever remains from the day, so check the pack date. See supermarket sushi compared.

Hungry at 3am? A hot bowl is often the better choice than day-old raw fish. Beef-bowl chains such as Sukiya trade late, and some branches around the clock. See beyond sushi: Japanese dishes explained.

Late-night delivery

Keeta and foodpanda both run late, but sushi choices shrink after about 22:30, when most chain kitchens close. Late orders are mostly izakayas and supermarkets. Order early in the evening if you want sushi rather than fried food, and avoid raw fish during storms, when delivery can be suspended. See sushi delivery in Hong Kong and delivery fees and minimum orders.

Take extra care with raw fish late at night. Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety classifies sushi and sashimi as high-risk foods and identifies 4°C to 60°C as the danger zone. Late-night fish has usually been held longer. Buy from cold displays, check dates, eat promptly, and never keep leftovers until morning. Pregnant diners, young children and anyone immunocompromised should choose cooked food. See how to store sushi and sashimi safely.

Late sushi by district

Tsim Sha Tsui is the best district for late sushi: Gonpachi, Aqua, Sushi Tobi, Sake Bar MURA and 24-hour Donki are all close together. Causeway Bay has CHU CHU. Central has sake bars around Graham Street and Lyndhurst Terrace. See Hong Kong sushi by district.
