Sushi Restaurants Open on Public Holidays in Hong Kong

Public holidays in Hong Kong can be the best or worst time for sushi. Chains usually open, often earlier than usual, but queues are long. Small independent counters may close on their normal day off regardless of the holiday. And hotel buffets usually charge weekend prices on holidays and their eves.

Holiday rules of thumb. Chains usually open — sen-ryo opens at 11am on weekends and public holidays, and Genki Sushi lists holiday hours at many branches. Small counters may close on their fixed day off. Buffets charge more — Kerry Hotel's Japanese buffet is HKD 868 on holidays and eves against HKD 768 midweek. Book early and check hours before you go.

Chains on public holidays

sen-ryo branches typically trade until 22:30, with some opening at 11am on weekends and public holidays. Genki Sushi's Kennedy Town branch trades 11:30am to 10:30pm Friday to Sunday and public holidays, and its Citygate branch 11am to 10:30pm including holidays. Sushiro branches usually open at 10:30am, and its app lets you book a slot. See the best conveyor belt sushi.

Beat the holiday queue: go at opening time, or between 2:30pm and 5pm. Add 30 to 60 minutes to any normal wait on public holidays. See sushi chain queue apps.

Counters and their days off

Many small counters close on a fixed weekday whether or not it is a holiday. Recent listings show Sushi Sadayama closed on Wednesday, Uehara closed on Monday, Kanesaka closed on Sunday, Udatsu Sushi closed on Monday and Sunday, and HAN DINING closed on Sunday. Some market-based kitchens, such as the Japanese restaurant at Tsun Yip Cooked Food Market in Kwun Tong, close on Sundays and public holidays.

Buffets on public holidays

Hotel buffets usually apply their weekend rate on holidays and holiday eves. Kerry Hotel's Japanese seafood buffet runs HKD 768 Monday to Thursday and HKD 868 Friday to Sunday, public holidays and eves. Kowloon Shangri-La has charged HKD 558 for holiday lunch and HKD 878 for holiday dinner, against HKD 498 and HKD 818 on weekdays. See hotel Japanese buffets and buffet lunch versus dinner prices.

Festival menus

Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year often bring special menus at higher prices and stricter booking terms. Book three to four weeks ahead for these dates.

Festival menus can disappoint. At one hotel counter, a diner paid HKD 3,080 per person on New Year's Eve 2025, noted a chef change, and felt it was not worth the price. Ask exactly what is included, and read the most recent reviews.

Delivery and takeaway on holidays

Keeta and foodpanda operate on public holidays, but kitchens are busy and deliveries can be slow. Collecting from a station-side branch is often faster. See sushi delivery and sushi takeaway near MTR stations.

Late on a holiday

Don Don Donki at 118 Nathan Road trades 24 hours. Late izakayas and sake bars can be busy on holiday nights. See late night sushi in Hong Kong.

Before you go on a holiday: check hours on the restaurant's own page · book or use the app · confirm holiday pricing · have a backup nearby · check the weather — typhoon signals can close restaurants and stop deliveries. See how to book a sushi restaurant.
